European painting developed over thousands of years and attained its greatest refinement during the Renaissance. With the introduction of commercial paint, and the more recent explosion of artistic theories and boundaries, traditional techniques have fallen into disuse – dismissed as archaic and irrelevant to modern times. But many art students still yearn to understand the methods which underpin our miraculous artistic heritage; fortunately they have not been entirely lost.

In this series of painting masterclasses the tutor will be demonstrating the use of oil paint, explaining how colours are mixed, and the use of such techniques as underpainting, glazing and scumbling, etc. Each class will focus on a particular artist who has perfected one or more of these techniques.

Artists studied:

• Titian • Rembrandt • Turner • Constable
