Saturday Courses

Saturday workshops offer the chance to either try a taster or take an intensive session.


Some courses will run as online courses and some will start at Stoke Lodge or St Pauls. You can see the starting venue/format for each course listed below. Please note: we reserve the right to change the format of the course, in term, should safety advice change.

Saturday 16 January

NEW  German  Day: Die Holbeins

Eine einflussreiche deutsche Künstlerfamilie des späten 15. und frühen 16. Jahrhunderts war die Familie Holbein.  In diesem Kurs  beschäftigen wir uns zunächst mit Hans Holbein dem Älteren (1465 – 1524), der zu den angesehensten Malern der Spätgotik und frühen Renaissance gehört. Der Schwerpunkt liegt jedoch auf den Werken seines Sohns Hans Holbein dem Jüngeren (1497 – 1543),  der sich mit seinen Porträtgemälden einen erstklassigen Ruf verschaffte, nicht zuletzt am Hof von Heinrich VIII. von England.

Italian Day: Storia della lingua italiana

Gli studenti possono aspettarsi un affascinante workshop fatto di linguistica, letteratura e magia. L’obiettivo è scoprire la storia della lingua italiana: dal latino fino ai giorni nostri, attraverso la lettura di alcuni passi della Divina Commedia di Dante Alighieri.

Upholstery on Saturdays

These one day workshops can be used as a “taster” or as an opportunity to complete an unfinished project. If you intend to finish a project in a day, please bring fabric and braid (if appropriate). Please choose a small, manageable piece. No previous experience necessary.

Learn Mindfulness techniques and meditation practices as a way to naturally enhance the enjoyment of your life. Participants will receive notes and MP3 recordings by email after the session in order to maintain the practice at home.

Spanish Day:  Descubriendo el “Guernica” de Pablo Picasso

Este seminario se centra en el estudio de una de las obras más relevantes del siglo XX: el Guernica de Pablo Picasso. Estudiaremos el contexto histórico, personajes, inspiraciones y la relevancia de esta obra durante la Guerra Civil española.

NEW Austrian Day: Wien um die Jahrundertwende

In diesem Kurs werfen wir einen Blick auf das „Fin de Siecle“ in der Wiener Kunstszene, die sogenannte „Wiener Moderne“. Dazu gehören die Wiener Sezession, die Wiener Werksätte, die Kaffeehausliteratur sowie einige andere Aspekte wie soziales Leben, Psychologie, Architektur und Musik. Neben einigen allgemeinen Informationen über berühmte Vertreter der „Wiener Moderne“  werden wir Gemälde und literarische Texte diskutieren.

NEW Stained Glass Saturday– Copperfoil Spring Flowers

Come and celebrate the joy of spring flowers and make a stained glass copper foil flower in beautiful coloured glass. Learn the copper foil technique which is easy and fun in this one day workshop. Suitable for the complete beginner

Fee includes classroom sundries; learners will need to purchase coloured glass and additional solder from tutor approximate cost £10.

NEW Exploring Mozart’s Mass in C Minor

Come and spend a day listening to and exploring Mozart’s choral masterpiece and how we respond to it including background and discussion. No previous knowledge needed – all are welcome.

NEW  Spanish Day:  El uso de la violencia y la fantasía en “El Laberinto del Fauno”

NEW  German  Day: Die Nibelungen

Das Nibelungenlied ist ein episches Gedicht, das um 1200 in Mittelhochdeutsch geschrieben wurde. Sein anonymer Dichter stammte wahrscheinlich aus der Region Passau. Das Nibelungenlied basiert auf einer mündlichen Überlieferung, die ihren Ursprung in historischen Ereignissen und Individuen des 5. und 6. Jahrhunderts hat.

In diesem Kurs machen wir uns mit den Geschichten aus der Nibelungensage bekannt und ordnen ihre Bedeutung in der deutschen Kultur ein – von Heldengeschichten, Filmen bis hin zu Wagners „Ring des Nibelungen“.

NEW Austrian Day: Reise in den Süden – Villach und der Alpen-Adria Raum

In diesem Kurs werden wir uns die Dreiländerregion Alpen-Adria genauer ansehen: den Süden Österreichs, den Nordosten Italiens und den Nordwesten Sloweniens. Die Kursteilnehmer können eine unterhaltsame Reise durch diese atemberaubende Landschaft mit ihren beeindruckenden Bergen und kristallklaren Seen und Flüssen erwarten. Wir werden über Traditionen und Bräuche, Speisen und Getränke sowie einige architektonische und künstlerische Aspekte sprechen. Neben Natur und Wohlbefinden ist dieses Gebiet auch reich an kulturellen Traditionen und politischen Konflikten und der Schmelztiegel der drei wichtigsten europäischen Sprachen: Romanisch, Slawisch und Germanisch.

NEW Willow Moon Gazing Hare

Using locally sourced willow Sarah will show you how to weave willow into a 3D Moon Gazing Hare sculpture. Discover the creative potential of willow, how to prepare it for weaving and how to manipulate it to create sculptures and create one of these wonderful creatures for your garden.

Practical: Make your own woven willow hare, to take home, so please allow for necessary transportation.

Literature – Discovering Ernest Hemingway

This workshop will be an opportunity to explore Hemingway’s distinctive writing style. In this workshop we will read some of his earliest short stories to appreciate his simple, direct and unadorned prose.

The course will take place at Stoke Lodge, but will move online if necessary.  The online platform used will be Zoom.

NEW   Easter Bunny and Basket

Weave your own willow Easter Bunny to adorn your home or garden and make a beautiful nest basket for collecting your eggs.  Practical: Make a rabbit and a nest style basket from locally sourced willow.

NEW German  Day: Otto Fürst von Bismarck

In diesem Kurs beschäftigen wir uns mit Bismarck –  Otto Eduard Leopold, Prinz von Bismarck, Herzog von Lauenburg ( 1. April 1815 – 30. Juli 1898), bekannt als Otto von Bismarck,   Preußischer Ministerpräsident, erster Reichskanzler des Deutschen Reiches, allgemein im Volksmund und in der Geschichtsschreibung auch der „Eiserne Kanzler“ genannt, der zwei Jahrzehnte lang die europäischen Angelegenheiten beherrschte.
