Meet Anthony Case Study: Real Learners, Real Progress

Meet our Italian Learner, Anthony. After retirement, Anthony decided to take up Italian as a way to stay active and prepare for travel:

I’m doing Spanish because although I had done it in the past, I wanted to improve my ability to speak the language and be able to converse in Spanish while on holiday. My Spanish has improved a lot, I’ve made friends and found out about a lot of other interesting things going on in Bristol.

Something that is very important to me is being in a group. My speaking has improved hugely from talking with others. It helped me prepare to travel and given me confidence in conversing with members of the Hispanic community in Bristol. I regularly have a little chat in Spanish to the barista in my local coffee shop – I’m sure I still get things wrong! but he humours me, and its become a bit of a routine for us.

Occasionally, I use Duolingo for practice, but there is nothing like having a Spanish speaking tutor, as I learn so much about the culture and the country as well as. I’m also taking a course looking at Spanish films and I really enjoy being introduced to films and directors I may not otherwise have discovered.

What are the language courses like?
The groups are friendly and encouraging and give lots of opportunity for feedback and sharing of ideas. If you are looking to make a start with a language course or you are a more experienced speaker looking to brush up or improve on your conversation skills our courses and workshops are the perfect place for you.

Course discussions will enable learners to listen and speak to gain confidence and to better enable them to converse fluently.
Do I need previous experience?
If you don’t have any experience, you can still learn with us. We would recommend a Complete Beginners course.

If you have some experience or if you’ve studied the language before (even a little) then there are lots of different levels to choose from. It’s just a case of finding the right one for you.

If you are not sure which level is correct you can take our quick quizzes to help find your level or contact us to talk to someone about the different options available.

We know many of our learners will have tried out language apps such as Duolingo, while these are great for increasing your exposure to the language and can be a useful practice tool, learners need to be aware that the hours and levels on apps like this do not equate to classroom levels or prepare your language skills in the same way as face to face classes. For example, 20 hours of Duolingo study is not equal to 20 hours of classroom learning.

Yes, we have a morning and an afternoon tea/coffee break at Stoke Lodge.

Drinks are served in the main building (just next to the annexe) and we charge £1 for a cup of tea, coffee or herbal tea with biscuits.

Tea breaks are a great way to step away from your project, grab a drink and catch up with learners on your course or those on other courses in the building. Its always a nice social part of the day where everyone gets the chance to stretch their legs and refresh.
