Hello everyone and welcome back to the spring term with Bristol Adult Learning. It’s been rather wet and windy but hopefully we have some lovely crisp spring days to come.
As we move into February we will be celebrating the start of the Lunar New Year – the Year of the Horse –symbolising adventure and vitality. The 16 day festival starts on 17 February and we wish all those celebrating a very Happy New Year.
Mid-February also marks the start of Ramadan, an important time in the Muslim calendar. Ramadan is a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community and we wish all those observing Ramadan a peaceful holy month. “Ramadan Mubarak” (have a blessed Ramadan)

Textile Courses
Get creative with textiles…
Crochet Plus-Tunisian Crochet Garment T78D
You will design your own garment, learning how to measure your body and follow the necessary steps to create it. Using Tunisian crochet, you will work with basic or advanced stitches and incorporate colour play. Beginners can create flat panels, while experienced learners can work in the round.
Fabric Weaving – Beginners T96C
A creative introduction to hand-weaving on a rigid heddle loom, guiding learners through the process of making cotton fabric and transforming it into unique, personalised pieces.

The course encourages creative play, combining artistic intuition with simple, effective methods. You will develop the confidence and skills to create captivating watercolour paintings that express your unique artistic vision. Your tutor will provide tailored guidance and support to help you achieve your artistic goals. Impressed-The Art Of Dry Point Etching P49D
You will learn how to create etchings by tracing images onto plastic sheets, inking them, and using a printing press to produce your artwork.
Experiment with mark-making techniques to transform photos of meaningful places, pets, or your own abstract designs into striking prints. You will also explore alternative materials like Tetra Pak. If you wish, you can further develop your prints by adding colour.

Things to brighten the darker months…
Bristol Light Festival returns this year between 19-28 February with a variety on installations across city set to transform dark spaces into illuminated works of art. You can find out more about what is available on their website www.bristollightfestival.org

The Martin Parr Foundation who are based at Paintworks in South Bristol, have an upcoming exhibition – The Last Resort starting on 20 Feb.
To honour Martin Parr following his death on 6 December, the MPF gallery will now open in 2026 with an exhibition of Martin’s iconic series, The Last Resort. Shot around the English seaside town of New Brighton between 1983 and 1985, The Last Resort was one of the pioneering bodies of work driving British colour documentary photography and established Martin as one of Britain’s most influential photographers.
