Some courses will run as online courses and some will start at Stoke Lodge .  You can see the starting venue/format for each course listed below. We reserve the right to change the format of the course, in term, should safety advice change.


Creative Writing – Do you wish you could write?

A playful course in which we explore different kinds of writing from journalling, poetry, letter writing, autobiography, and story. We will experiment with words through fun exercises and take inspiration from established authors, diarists, artists and poets to bring freedom to our self-expression. Focussing on process, results often come with joyous surprises. Participants will gain the tools to develop a personal writing practice. Suitable for those new to writing, established writers looking for fresh inspiration and anyone seeking a creative boost.

Creative Writing – Introduction to writing Fiction

Get to grips with story writing, covering narration, structure, and how to engage the reader in your hero’s tale. Learn what to put in and what to keep out. Explore character, description, dialogue and plot through stimulating exercises and plenty of time for writing. Enjoy the company of others who are keen to write.

Literature – Discovering Ernest Hemingway

This workshop will be an opportunity to explore Hemingway’s distinctive writing style. In this workshop we will read some of his earliest short stories to appreciate his simple, direct and unadorned prose.

The course will take place at Stoke Lodge, but will move online if necessary.  The online platform used will be Zoom.

This course will explore representative twentieth and twenty-first-century texts and films from Hispanic America and Spain.  We will discuss authors and directors such as Lorca, Almodóvar, Borges, Del Toro, Bunuel or Roberto Bolano.
